Be the Gift, by New York Times-bestselling author Ann Voskamp, will challenge and encourage you to listen to God and look for opportunities to be His gift to others. The idea that even in the depths of our own brokenness God can use each of us to be a gift to someone else is powerful--that He makes each of us enough to give to someone else. Just as powerful is the realization that in becoming God's gifts to others, our lives become more abundant: "Maybe the only abundant way forward is always to give forward." Ideas this powerful need to be put into action. Live out the messages in Ann's bestselling books, The Broken Way and One Thousand Gifts, with Be the Gift, a practical guide that takes you through each day of the year with ways to bless those around you. Featuring selections from The Broken Way and Ann's blog, beautifully designed quotations, inspirational verses, and Ann's signature photography, this gorgeous book will be an incredible gift to any loved one. It also includes pages of perforated gift tags in the back to include with a meal dropped off for an ailing friend or a pie baked for a friendly neighbor or even passed to a friend with a much-loved book. One Thousand Gifts encouraged readers to live a life of thanksgiving and to chronicle the gifts from God in their everyday lives. The Broken Way reminded that freedom is not found beyond fear and pain, but within it. Now Be the Gift will unpack and chronicle the next step to really live in communion--opening ourselves up to givenness in spite of our brokenness.

This book brings together two traditions of thinking about social ties: sociological theory on sol idarity and anthropological theory on gift exchange. The purpose of the book is to explore how both theoretical traditions may complete and enrich each other, and how they may illuminate transformations in solidarity. The main argument, supported by empirical illustrations, is that a theory of solidarity should incorporate some of the core insights from anthropological gift theory. The book presents a theoretical model covering both positive and negative--selective and excluding--aspects and consequences of solidarity.

Does what we are capable of doing define us as human beings? If this basic anthropological assumption is true, where can that leave those with intellectual disabilities, unable to accomplish the things that we propose give us our very humanity? Hans Reinders here makes an unusual claim about unusual people: those who are profoundly disabled are people just like the rest of us. He acknowledges that, at first glance, this is not an unusual claim given the steps taken within the last few decades to bring the rights of those with disabilities into line with the rights of the mainstream. But, he argues, that cannot be the end of the matter, because the disabled are human beings before they are citizens. "To live a human life properly," he says, "they must not only be included in our institutions and have access to our public spaces; they must also be included in other people's lives, not just by natural necessity but by choice." Receiving the Gift of Friendship consists of three parts: (1) Profound Disability, (2) Theology, and (3) Ethics. Overturning the "commonsense" view of human beings, Reinders's argument for a paradigm shift in our relation to people with disabilities is founded on a groundbreaking philosophical-theological consideration of humanity and of our basic human commonality. Moreover, Reinders gives his study human vividness and warmth with stories of the profoundly disabled from his own life and from the work of Jean Vanier and Henri Nouwen in L'Arche communities.

Salvation, what is it? Who needs it? Who all can have it? How do you get it? What is my assurance of it and that I truly have it? What is your assurance of your salvation? To put it simply, God’s Word is our assurance! His infallible Word, his unchanging Word. It’s not a feeling. I have ministered to and have heard so many people say this. “I don’t feel saved.” I am talking about those that say that they are Christian and have accepted Christ. And that is another reason for this book, to help these people to understand salvation. And to help those to understand salvation and to receive Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. Let me share this experience with you. To help you understand your assurance of your salvation. And let no one or nothing shake or doubt your salvation, including yourself. Pray and walk through these chapters with me and find the answers to all these questions and more. *What Is Salvation? *No Other Name *Without Faith *Believe or Not! *The Seal, the Promise, and Your Guarantee *The Gift

Until recently we have known more about gift giving practices in pre-industrial societies than about those of industrial western society. In this book, first published in 1988, David Cheal shows that the process of present giving and receiving is a vital element in contemporary social life, relevant to some of the most important theoretical traditions in sociology, particularly those of Durkheim and Weber, and to the social constructionism of Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann. This volume is the result of a major study of gift rituals carried out by David Cheal and his associates in which general themes are richly illustrated with details from individual case histories gathered during the research. It is highly significant that in western society women are more active gift givers than men and, while their voices explain how emotions and interests are interrelated within the gift economy, the author shows how that in turn is related to current theories about family, gender and religion.

Drawing from the pages of her many private diaries and journals, Janeah Rose, an intuitive consultant and healer, shares stories of her life, her clients, and her gifts. Written with candour and humour, her memoirs start with her own tale. When she was a child, her family began to notice the young girl's innate intuitive abilities and wisely nurtured them. Janeah's story would be incomplete without the stories of the clients who have become friends over the years. Their gratitude inspires her own; she thanks each of these people who have shared their lives and loved ones with her. By inviting her into their private worlds, they have enriched hers as well. Throughout the years, she has helped them recognise the need to change their life path, sometimes with the support of loved ones who have passed over. Filled with true stories that are by turns uncanny, unbelievable, and heartwarming, Janeah's memoir explores metaphysics from all dimensions. Even in the midst of uncertainty, challenges, and obstacles, she has used her extraordinary gifts of intuition, visions, and spirit guides, along with her inner voice, to help people get back on track and on a path to discover their own purpose and gifts. With certainty, clarity, and hope, she explores how embracing such an unexpected path can empower anyone willing to take the journey to self-discovery.

The Gift Of European Thought And The Cost Of Living

European thought is often said to be a gift to the rest of the world, but what if there is no gift as such? What if there is only an economy where every giving is also a taking, and every taking is also a giving? This book extends the question of economies by making a case for an "economy of thought" and a "political economy." It argues that all thinking and doing presupposes taking, and therefore giving, as the price to pay for taking; or that there exists a "cost of living," which renders the idea of free thinking and living untenable. The argument is developed against the Enlightenment directive to think for oneself as the means of becoming autonomous and shows that this "light," given to the rest of the world as a gift, turns out to be nothing.
