An accomplished novel from a talented writer, Letters to the Lost is a stunning, emotional love story. Iona Grey's prose is warm, evocative, and immediately engaging; her characters become so real you can't bear to let them go. I promised to love you forever, in a time when I didn't know if I'd live to see the start of another week. Now it looks like forever is finally running out. I never stopped loving you. I tried, for the sake of my own sanity, but I never even got close, and I never stopped hoping either. Late on a frozen February evening, a young woman is running through the streets of London. Having fled from her abusive boyfriend and with nowhere to go, Jess stumbles onto a forgotten lane where a small, clearly unlived in old house offers her best chance of shelter for the night. The next morning, a mysterious letter arrives and when she can't help but open it, she finds herself drawn inexorably into the story of two lovers from another time. In London 1942, Stella meets Dan, a US airman, quite by accident, but there is no denying the impossible, unstoppable attraction that draws them together. Dan is a B-17 pilot flying his bomber into Europe from a British airbase; his odds of survival are one in five. In the midst of such uncertainty, the one thing they hold onto is the letters they write to each other. Fate is unkind and they are separated by decades and continents. In the present, Jess becomes determined to find out what happened to them. Her hope—inspired by a love so powerful it spans a lifetime—will lead her to find a startling redemption in her own life in this powerfully moving novel.

It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more -- though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was -- lovely and amazing and deeply flawed -- can she begin to discover her own path in this stunning debut from Ava Dellaira, Love Letters to the Dead.

An epistolary novel set on a fictional island off the South Carolina coastline, 'Ella Minnow Pea' brings readers to the hometown of Nevin Nollop, inventor of the pangram 'The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog'. Deified for his achievement in life, Nevin has been honored in death with a monument featuring his famous phrase. One day, however, the letter 'Z' falls from the monument, and some of the islanders interpret the missing tile as a message from beyond the grave. The letter 'Z' is banned from use. On an island where the residents pride them-selves on their love of language, this is seen as a tragedy. They are still reeling from the shock when another tile falls. And then another... In his charming debut, first published in 2001, Mark Dunn took readers on a journey through the eyes of Ella Minnow Pea, a young woman forced to create another clever turn of phrase in order to save the islanders’ beloved language.

What follows (part dialogue, part monologue, mostly rumination) is a series of letters I wrote to my two children, Chris(topher) Russell and Alex(andra) Sophia, over the course of 24 years. The first letter is one I wrote to my son on his day of birth: November 25, 1991; the last is one I wrote to my daughter leading up to her twenty-first birthday on June 8, 2015. Some letters are missing from this publication: they're either lost to other computers, other hard drives, other floppy discs-or are still in storage in the Bronx. I may or may not be able to recover them ever again. What, then, is-and was, from its genesis-the rationale for these letters? Quite simply, a desire to recall, as accurately as possible, the physical, moral and cognitive development of my two children year by year, and blow by blow, as they grew from infancy to toddlerhood, and from childhood to adolescence. But why? So that if they ever needed to, they could one day look back and understand a large part of what made (and makes) them who they are as adults in all of their scintillating functionality or dysfunctionality. This publication may or may not prove to be a worthy addition-or at least a side note-to the ever-raging debate of Nature vs. Nurture. I'm not a psychologist. I'm a writer ... "with a gift [or at least a head] for fiction" (David Mamet, State and Main) to boot. And so, I must warn you: caveat lector! That said, these letters are the verbal foundation of a truth I aspired to establish early on with my children. What I conveyed often enough orally to my son from the moment he could understand English-namely, "You don't lie to me; I won't lie to you"-was never easy for either of us to embrace. And in some sense, at least, I made my part of the bargain easier by concealing lots of difficult truths until his eighteenth birthday (in 2009), when I suspected he'd be better able to handle those truths in written form.He was. And did.On that basis, and once I'd returned to Brooklyn just short of a month ago, I decided to risk the same with Alex, and consequently gave her all of the letters I'd addressed to her and that I could still access. But why should anyone have any interest whatsoever in an otherwise private correspondence between a father and his children? I can't say that anyone will. That said, no one has ever written a series of letters to his or her children over the course of nineteen years (if one includes those children's day of birth). At least, not that I know of. We all think thoughts; forge memories; bond, then break bonds; grow close, then grow apart. But too much of what occurs to a child gets lost in the shuffle-or worse, gets suppressed, only to raise its arrogant head in some other form(s) in adulthood. The events that first kept us together as a family unit-but then blew us apart-were nothing I could've anticipated in my wildest dreams or nightmares. The strategies my children and I have employed to keep us close over the years are ones the children of estranged parents will hardly consider novel. But the words my two children said (and sometimes wrote in e-mails) to me are some of the kindest, most considerate-and yes, most loving-I've ever heard out of the mouth of any child. In that sense, this collection is a gift to all parents for whom it's not already too late. While not everyone has the free time I've had over the years, not to mention a facility with writing candidly about family matters for future reference. I don't know that such a facility is really all that important; I rather think it's the gesture, the consistency, the promise made and kept. The royalties, should there be any, are entirely theirs-as are the responsibilities that come with publishing a book. I will henceforth let them speak for themselves. As of this Father's Day in 2015-just as on other Father's Days in years past-I couldn't be happier with either of them. But that's a father speaking. Caveat emptor!

Treasure hunters Peter Fallon and Evangeline Carrington are heading for adventure in Washington D.C., the sleek, modern, power-hungry capital of America...and the crowded, muddy, intrigue-filled nexus of the Civil War. Their prize? A document of incredible historical importance and incalculable value: Abraham Lincoln's diary. What if Lincoln recorded his innermost thoughts as he moved toward the realization that he must free the slaves? And what if that diary slipped from his fingers in 1862? A recently discovered letter written by Lincoln suggests that the diary exists and is waiting to be found. Some want the diary for its enormous symbolic value to a nation that reveres Lincoln. Others believe it carries a dark truth about Lincoln's famous proclamation--a truth that could profoundly impact the fast-approaching elections and change the course of a nation. Peter and Evangeline must race against these determined adversaries to uncover a document that could shake the foundation of Lincoln's legacy. From William Martin, the New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Constitution, The Lincoln Letter is a breathless chase across the Washington of today as well as a political thriller set in our besieged Civil War capital. It is a story of old animosities that still smolder, old philosophies that still contend, and a portrait of our greatest president as he passes from lawyer to leader in the struggle for a new birth of freedom.
