The New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street novels delivers a gripping tale of family, fate, and forgiveness. When Piper Mills was twelve, she helped her grandfather bury a box that belonged to her grandmother in the backyard. For twelve years, it remained untouched. Now a near fatal riding accident has shattered Piper’s dreams of Olympic glory. After her grandfather’s death, she inherits the house and all its secrets, including a key to a room that doesn’t exist—or does it? And after her grandmother is sent away to a nursing home, she remembers the box buried in the backyard. In it are torn pages from a scrapbook, a charm necklace—and a newspaper article from 1939 about the body of an infant found floating in the Savannah River. The necklace’s charms tell the story of three friends during the 1930s— each charm added during the three months each friend had the necklace and recorded her life in the scrapbook. Piper always dismissed her grandmother as not having had a story to tell. And now, too late, Piper finds she might have been wrong.

Dean Rhodes, Peninsula Daily News editor, arrived at work at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005. At about 10:45 a.m., Dean looked up and asked inquisitively, "Where's Brian?" Fellow reporters Jim Casey and Raul Vasquez both stopped what they were doing, turned in unison to look at Brian's empty chair, turned back to Dean and said they didn't know. They were wondering the same thing, especially since Brian hadn't been there Monday either. "What do you mean he wasn't here Monday? Did he call in sick?" Thus was set in motion the search and rescue effort that later was described as "looking for a needle in a needlestack." The author says, "When I tell people about spending 65.5 hours lost in the wilderness in my running outfit with no food, the two questions I get most often are 'Were you scared?' and 'Did you think you were going to die?' The short answers are "At the beginning and at the end." and "No." The longer answers I hope I will provide to your satisfaction in the pages ahead."

In 2005, Richard Underberg a psychiatrist, forced into a medical sabbatical meets a dream tormented world war 2 veteran who can't remember critical events of an audacious glider assault that he was part of in the early hours of DDay 6th June 1944. Intrigued by the narrative of the soldier and compelled by inner emotional forces that he does not fully understand, a determined Underberg travels to Normandy to unravel the lost hours of the war veteran. In a riveting step by step exploration of the glider landing sites in Normandy, Underberg uncovers the missing information from unexpected sources that enable him to resolve the fragmented memory of the war veteran. A chance meeting with the beautiful Director of Art of the Musee d'Orsay, Claudine d'Este, blossoms from infatuation to deep love as she assists him in solving the enigma of the soldiers lost hours. At the same time Underberg becomes aware that the deeply resonating and complex emotions he is experiencing are rooted in his and Claudine's mutual heritages and traumas. It is only on the last page that all the fragments of bravery, the success of Allied intelligence and planning, Nazi ruthlessness and mutual traumas are coalesced into a jolting yet satisfying ending for the reader. "Unlike many other World War novels, the book is not dripping with tears and misery - neither is it a lightweight in tone.."....... Krystyna Smith. "Friend, colleague, professional photographer and start up novelist, Irvine Eidelman has produced a novel replete with Holocaust terror, Allied victory, empathy, romance and touches of humour." .......Dr Cecil Schneider.

Address to the Conference on Employee Mental Wellness by Walter B. Wriston, Chairman, Citicorp The mental well-being of employees is a subject of fundamental importance to each of us, our companies, our professions, and the nation. Both the Washington Business Group on Health and Boston University's Center for Industry and Health Care should be commended for the timely initiative this conference represents. I hope it will be come an ongoing effort to improve the mental health services to the nation's private sector workers and their dependents. I have had a deep interest in the delivery of health care for a long time, both from the perspective of a major employer and from my participation in the governance of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. It has also been my privilege to chair the Business Round table's Task Force on Health and to serve on the President's Labor Management Committee which, among other things, has been working on heaith care problems. This experience obviously does not give me any claim to special expertise on the issue of mental health. It may prove helpful, however, as we work together formulating our thoughts about the nation's health system, the role of industry, and where the mental health issue fits into the picture.

Halfway To Heaven

Fat, forty-four, father of three sons, and facing a vasectomy, Mark Obmascik would never have guessed that his next move would be up a 14,000-foot mountain. But when his twelve-year-old son gets bitten by the climbing bug at summer camp, Obmascik can't resist the opportunity for some high-altitude father-son bonding by hiking a peak together. After their first joint climb, addled by the thin air, Obmascik decides to keep his head in the clouds and try scaling all 54 of Colorado's 14,000-foot mountains, known as the Fourteeners -- and to do them in less than one year. The result is Halfway to Heaven, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Obmascik's rollicking, witty, sometimes harrowing, often poignant chronicle of an outrageous midlife adventure that is no walk in the park, although sometimes it's A Walk in the Woods -- but with more sweat and less oxygen. Half a million people try climbing a Colorado Fourteener every year, but only twelve hundred have reported summiting them all. Can an overweight, stay-at-home dad become No. 1,201? With his ebullient personality and sparkling prose, Obmascik brings us inside the quirky, colorful subculture of mountaineering obsessives who summit these mountains year after year. Honoring his concerned wife's orders not to climb alone, Obmascik drags old friends up the slopes, some of them lifelong flatlanders tasting thin air for the first time, and lures seasoned Rockies junkies into taking on a huffing, puffing newbie by bribing them with free beer, lunches, and car washes. Among the new friends he makes are an ex-drag racer trying to perform a headstand on every summit, the lead oboe player in a Hebrew salsa band, and a climber with the counterproductive pre-climb ritual of gulping down four beers and a burrito. Along the way, Obmascik experiences the raw, rowdy, and rarely seen intimacy of male friendship, braced by the double intoxicants of adrenaline and altitude. Though danger is always present -- the Colorado Fourteeners have killed more climbers than Mount Everest -- Mark knows his aging scalp can't afford the hair-raising adventures of Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, and his quest becomes a story of family, friendship, and fraternity. In Obmascik's summer of climbing, he loses fifteen pounds, finds a few dozen man-dates, and gains respect for the history of these storied mountains (home to cannibalism, gold rushes, shoot-outs, and one of the nation's most famed religious shrines). As much about midlife and male bonding as it is about mountains, Halfway to Heaven tells how weekend warriors can survive them all as they reach for those most distant things -- the summits of mountains and a teenage son. And as one man exceeds the physical achievements of his youth, he discovers that age -- like summit height -- is just a number.

It was the end. Subienkow had travelled a long trail of bitterness and horror, homing like a dove for the capitals of Europe, and here, farther away than ever, in Russian America, the trail ceased. He sat in the snow, arms tied behind him, waiting the torture. He stared curiously before him at a huge Cossack, prone in the snow, moaning in his pain. The men had finished handling the giant and turned him over to the women. That they exceeded the fiendishness of the men, the man's cries attested. Subienkow looked on, and shuddered. He was not afraid to die. He had carried his life too long in his hands, on that weary trail from Warsaw to Nulato, to shudder at mere dying. But he objected to the torture. It offended his soul. And this offence, in turn, was not due to the mere pain he must endure, but to the sorry spectacle the pain would make of him. He knew that he would pray, and beg, and entreat, even as Big Ivan and the others that had gone before. This would not be nice.

Prairie Gulch, Texas, is a rough-and-tumble town tucked away on the fringes of the civilized world; the Civil War has had its effect here, though, in spite of the town's isolation. It has been twenty years since the war ended, and yet people still remember the pain it caused. Some citizens even harbor secrets of that dark time-secrets told to no one. Could the woman living in the large house on the edge of town be the legend whispered about for years? The knowledge of a truth that could rewrite history comes with a heavy price - a price some have already paid and others will. A series of strange deaths suddenly sets the city on its toes and reawakens past pain. Decades earlier, the assassination of President Lincoln shocked the nation. Now, his ghost seems to haunt their small Texas town. In this third and final installment of the Song of the Red Sparrow series, all secrets are revealed, all conflicts resolved, and all lives changed.

Analytical Procedures For Determining The Impacts Of Reliability Mitigation Strategies

"Reliability of transport, especially the ability to reach a destination within a certain amount of time, is a regular concern of travelers and shippers. The definition of reliability used in this research is how travel time varies over time. The variability can apply to the travel times observed over a road segment during a specific time slice (e.g., 3 to 6 p.m.) over a fairly long period of time, say a year. The variability can also pertain to the travel times of repeated trips made by a person or a truck between a given origin and destination. Agencies are increasingly aware of the issue of reliability, although the transportation industry as a whole as yet lacks a firm understanding of the causes and solutions to failures of reliability. As the agenda for the SHRP 2 research on travel time reliability took shape, it became clear a fundamental study was required to be able to talk about travel time reliability in a meaningful way"--Foreword.

Rhett James Harding wakes up in a small clinic, without his memory. As he struggles to recover some recall, he discovers that the small town he is in holds many secrets. The first thing he has to discover is his own name and after that he needs to know why he is in the town at all. As he discovers these things while dating as many of the attractive girls in town as he can find, he also encounters the evil deacon of the Church of Our Lady of Sophia. His enquiries uncover that the church is not a Catholic church as it sounds to be and Our Lady is the Black Virgin while Sophia is an ancient name of the goddess of Wisdom. After those unexpected translations he is hardly surprised when he discovers that the church worships Lucifer and that he had unknowingly narrowly escaped being sacrificed to the Fallen Angel. Handicapped by his lack of memory he pieces together the history of the town and ultimately comes to the point where he has to, almost reluctantly; uncover the identity of the Black Virgin.
