A history of roaring prosperity—and economic cataclysm: “The one account of America in the 1920s against which all others must be measured” (The Washington Post). Beginning November 11, 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the end of World War I in a letter to the American public, and continuing through his defeat, Prohibition, the Big Red Scare, the rise of women’s hemlines, and the stock market crash of 1929, Only Yesterday, published just two years after the crash, chronicles a decade like no other. Allen, who witnessed firsthand the events he describes, immerses you in the era of flappers, speakeasies, and early radio, making you feel like part of history as it unfolds. This bestselling, enduring account brings to life towering historical figures including J. Pierpont Morgan, Henry Ford, Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Al Capone, Babe Ruth, and Jack Dempsey. Allen provides insightful, in-depth analyses of President Warren G. Harding’s oil scandal, the growth of the auto industry, the decline of the family farm, and the long bull market of the late twenties. Peppering his narrative with actual stock quotes and breaking financial news, Allen tracks the major economic trends of the decade and explores the underlying causes of the crash. From the trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti to the inventions, crazes, and revolutions of the day, this timeless work will continue to be savored for generations to come.

When Israeli Nobel Laureate S. Y. Agnon published the novel Only Yesterday in 1945, it quickly became recognized as a major work of world literature, not only for its vivid historical reconstruction of Israel's founding society. The book tells a seemingly simple tale about a man who immigrates to Palestine with the Second Aliya--the several hundred idealists who returned between 1904 and 1914 to work the Hebrew soil as in Biblical times and revive Hebrew culture. This epic novel also engages the reader in a fascinating network of meanings, contradictions, and paradoxes all leading to the question, what, if anything, controls human existence? Seduced by Zionist slogans, young Isaac Kumer imagines the Land of Israel filled with the financial, social, and erotic opportunities that were denied him, the son of an impoverished shopkeeper, in Poland. Once there, he cannot find the agricultural work he anticipated. Instead Isaac happens upon house-painting jobs as he moves from secular, Zionist Jaffa, where the ideological fervor and sexual freedom are alien to him, to ultra-orthodox, anti-Zionist Jerusalem. While some of his Zionist friends turn capitalist, becoming successful merchants, his own life remains adrift and impoverished in a land torn between idealism and practicality, a place that is at once homeland and diaspora. Eventually he marries a religious woman in Jerusalem, after his worldly girlfriend in Jaffa rejects him. Led astray by circumstances, Isaac always ends up in the place opposite of where he wants to be, but why? The text soars to Surrealist-Kafkaesque dimensions when, in a playful mode, Isaac drips paint on a stray dog, writing "Crazy Dog" on his back. Causing panic wherever he roams, the dog takes over the story, until, after enduring persecution for so long without "understanding" why, he really does go mad and bites Isaac. The dog has been interpreted as everything from the embodiment of Exile to a daemonic force, and becomes an unforgettable character in a book about the death of God, the deception of discourse, the power of suppressed eroticism, and the destiny of a people depicted in all its darkness and promise.

From the author of No.1 international bestseller Collapse, a mesmerizing portrait of the human past that offers profound lessons for how we can live today Visionary, prize-winning author Jared Diamond changed the way we think about the rise and fall of human civilizations with his previous international bestsellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse. Now he returns with another epic - and groundbreaking - journey into our rapidly receding past. In The World Until Yesterday, Diamond reveals how traditional societies around the world offer an extraordinary window onto how our ancestors lived for the majority of human history - until virtually yesterday, in evolutionary terms - and provide unique, often overlooked insights into human nature. Drawing extensively on his decades working in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, Diamond explores how tribal societies approach essential human problems, from childrearing to conflict resolution to health, and discovers we have much to learn from traditional ways of life. He unearths remarkable findings - from the reason why modern afflictions like diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer's are virtually non-existent in tribal societies to the surprising benefits of multilingualism. Panoramic in scope and thrillingly original, The World Until Yesterday provides an enthralling first-hand picture of the human past that also suggests profound lessons for how to live well today. Jared Diamond is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the seminal million-copy-bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel, which was named one of TIME's best non-fiction books of all time, and Collapse, a #1 international bestseller. A professor of geography at UCLA and noted polymath, Diamond's work has been influential in the fields of anthropology, biology, ornithology, ecology and history, among others.

Hannah Mariam Meherete-Selassie's book, It was Only Yesterday... is an insider's story about life as a royal teenager and growing up in the Jubilee Palace in Africa's first royal family under the protective eyes of her great grand-father Emperor Haile Selassie I, King of Kings, Lion of Judah, and Elect of God. In February 1974, her privileged life comes to an abrupt end with the advent of a bloody upheaval which overthrows her great grand-father's government and lands her mother and close family in a rotting Communist jail. By this time Hannah Mariam has fled to United Kingdom where she is granted status as a refugee. Interested in writing from a very young age, her first book It was Only Yesterday offers unique insights about the hardship she faced growing up in a new setting and how she effectively managed change and uncertainty. It was Only Yesterday is a delightful account of her interactions with friends and family in the backdrop of the intricate world of imperial protocol and palace politics. The book's narrative is based on diaries kept over the past forty-three years, a collection of family photographs, informal chats and interviews, generational stories, and researching academic books about her great grand-father and family. A promising new author, her readers will enjoy how she has interwoven personal experiences with firsthand knowledge of her great grand-father, one of the world's longest reigning monarchs and an important historical figure in Ethiopian, African and world history. The book's memoire genre will appeal to all, in particular to those interested in understanding the cultural, social, political and historical ramifications of pre-socialist Ethiopia of 1974.

Bob Lenon came from Nebraska to Yuma, in 1914, just two years after Arizona had become the 48th state. He remembers seeing the Colorado River when it had no highway bridges and traveling on a plank road across dunes where an Interstate Highway now runs. Because Bob grew up listening to neighbors' tales of gold in the hills, it was natural for him to make mining his life-as a prospector and as a mining engineer. He became an intrinsic part of the process by which copper, gold, and other metals were extracted from Arizona rock. In more than 90 years as an Arizonan, he has witnessed many changes, and, in fact, as a surveyor, he mapped a lot of them! In this second of two volumes, Bob describes his university years and his work for big mining companies in Bisbee and then as a smalltime entrepreneur in a region where mining had fallen upon hard times. He also recalls his service in World War II, after which, for 50 years, he was a mining consultant and owner of a surveying firm in Patagonia. In addition, he recounts tales told by a few of the historic maps in his vast collection.

THE BRONX IT WAS ONLY YESTERDAY, 1935-1965 tells the story of a dynamic period in the development of New York City's northernmost borough. The depths of the Great Depression brought the New Deal to combat the economic disaster, & this was followed quickly by the ferment of the Second World War. Peacetime brought great changes in society, including a movement from the city into the suburbs & a vast influx of different ethnic groups into the city. The Bronx was also marked by islands of stability & by continuity to the past. In these decades, entertainment shifted from enjoying movies & radio to spending hours watching newly-purchased black & white television sets; transportation changed from riding trolleys, buses, & subways to automobiles; musical taste switched from big bands to rock 'n' roll. Heretofore quiet neighborhoods were disturbed by the clatter of new highways & high-rise housing complexes. The absorbing narrative of the colorful activities of these times is complemented with numerous rare photographs from the research archives of The Bronx County Historical Society. They offer a vivid glimpse into the wide-ranging changes & elements of continuity that made the Bronx a desirable residence. Toronto's old Jewish neighbourhoods centered in the Ward and on Spadina Avenue are vividly recalled in these 18 evocative pieces by Ben Kayfetz and Stephen Speisman, both well-known chroniclers of Toronto's Jewish community. ONLY YESTERDAY features colourful stories of the Jewish community and its daily concerns, synagogues and social institutions, Yiddish theatres and newspapers, and an assortment of memorable characters from Mayor Nathan Phillips to anarchist Emma Goldman. Kayfetz is at his best as he explains the names of Toronto synagogues, reminisces about the city's once-formidable Jewish press, and profiles the legendary J. B. Salsberg; he also revisits the days when discrimination against minorities in everything from private clubs to the professions was both legal and socially acceptable. Speisman's articles include a masterful essay on the vanished downtown neighbourhood of St. John's Ward, a thumbnail history of the once-vibrant local Yiddish theatre, and a profile of Benjamin Brown, Toronto's first Jewish architect who designed many city landmarks. The text is enhanced with 144 photographs and illustrations, including dozens of photographs of former Toronto synagogues, many taken by Speisman and not published before. Additional photos came from the City of Toronto Archives, Ontario Jewish Archives, Archives of Ontario and private collections.

I don't think you will mind, but I visualize your Winter Fig Tree painting dominating the back of the jacket. It is, I realize, a very personal thing (and I don't want to get corny on you), but to me and what I see (maybe "feel" would be a better word) in this painting is a combination of a requiem and a promise.

'Unge can do a lot with a little.' - The Guardian, Best Short Stories of 2011. 'It Was Just, Yesterday is both atmospheric and menacing.' - The Manchester Review. 'Unge has an unusual and arresting style that is worthy of recognition. At times, there is real beauty in her writing which often showcases a deeply poetic style and thrusts you into an atmosphere, a world, or a conflict with ease and immediacy.' - Kate Kerrow, The Short Review On Christmas Eve, a girl stalks an older man through wintery city streets, haunted by their shared past... In a remote woodland cottage, an eccentric explains to his granddaughter why he shoots cats whenever they make themselves too comfortable... In a checkout queue, a woman suddenly shows charity to a penniless guy she apparently doesn’t know... The characters in Mirja Unge’s debut collection are all, in their own way, evading something; whether failing to confront the true nature of an encounter, or avoiding responsibilities as a parent, sibling or friend. Abuse, betrayal and neglect lurk beneath a veneer of mutually maintained ‘normality’, waiting for an opportunity to resurface. Told, in most cases, through the eyes of teenage girls or young women, these stories exhibit a unique prose style that perfectly captures the conversational rhythms, and preoccupations, of their generation. Unge’s soft, winding syntax ushers the reader across the surface of each encounter at an unalterable pace — like the ever-betraying passage of time — whilst deftly hinting at the violence beneath. ‘A breathtaking and intensive read, full of warmth, humour and darkness.’ — Moa Eriksson, Hallandsposten ‘Mirja Unge has once again convinced me that she is one of the most important writers in Sweden today.’ — Eva Hultin, Nerikes Allehanda

Before she¿d taken three steps, the thing in the boat moved again. And this time there could be no question. It was real. Unquestionably solid, undeniably human, it moved toward her, a fast-moving and barely seen blur.Kathy¿s first instinct was to raise her arm to protect her face. Her second, delayed by a precious second or two, was to run screaming, back toward the office. But as another ear-shattering rumble of thunder rolled across the sky, she knew she wasn¿t going to have that chance.
