Throughout the history of Christianity, Mary has been a beacon of hope to many who look to her. While Christians have always prayed to Mary, they have also sung to her in times of joy and sorrow. Sing of Mary analyzes Marian hymnody throughout Christianity—and particularly in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States from 1854 to today—focusing not only on the texts and music but also on the contexts out of which these hymns came. By using a holistic methodology—drawing from anthropology, history, liturgy, musicology, psychology, sociology, and theology—this study takes an interdisciplinary approach toward studying Marian theology and devotion through the lens of hymnody. This volume, accessible to both laypeople and academics, provides readers with a clear and full understanding of Marian hymnody by looking at many examples throughout the history of Christianity up through the present, thus shedding light on the history of Marian devotion and theology. The work concludes by providing hope for the future of Marian congregational song, particularly by exploring how the Magnificat can help Marian congregational song be meaningful to a wide range of Christians.

No Hindu god is closer to the soul of poetry than Krishna, and in North India no poet ever sang of Krishna more famously than S?rdD=as-or S?r, for short. He lived in the sixteenth century and became so influential that for centuries afterward aspiring Krishna poets signed their compositions orally with his name. This book takes us back to the source, offering a selection of S?rd=as's poems that were known and sung in the sixteenth century itself. Here we have poems of war, poems to the great rivers, poems of wit and rage, poems where the poet spills out his disappointments. Most of all, though, we have the memory of love-poems that adopt the voices of the women of Krishna's natal Braj country and evoke the power of being pulled into his irresistible orbit. Following the lead of several old manuscripts, Jack Hawley arranges these poems in such a way that they tell us Krishna's life story from birth to full maturity. These lyrics from S?r's Ocean (the S?rs=agar) were composed in the very tongue Hindus believe Krishna himself must have spoken: Brajbh=as=a, the language of Braj, a variety of Hindi. Hawley prepares the way for his verse translations with an introduction that explains what we know of S?rd=as and describes the basic structure of his poems. For readers new to Krishna's world or to the subtleties of a poet like S?rd=as, Hawley also provides a substantial set of analytical notes. "S?r is the sun," as a familiar saying has it, and we feel the warmth of his light in these pages.

The prayer life of the liturgical choir is essential to its ministry. The rhythm and outline of the choir's rehearsal reflect its depth of music making and experience of God. This resource combines the key components of the choir minister 'song, Scripture, prayer, reflection, and vocal pedagogy 'to enhance the work of the group, providing a sacred context in which al rehearsal takes place. Short musical refrains of original composition are easily learned and memorized through specific vocal pedagogy, building technique. These refrains also articulate the text of the prayers, authored to inspire the sense of our connection with God through music. Scripture passages and reflection questions invite choirs to broaden their musical perspective with heightened expression and deepened community. Choir directors and singers will have the necessary elements to frame the choir's gathering with the true purpose of their work 'the praise of God in song and word.
