The Diary of a Nobody is so unassuming a work that even its author, George Grossmith, seemed unaware that he had produced a masterpiece. For more than a century this wonderfully comic portrayal of suburban life and values has remained in print, a source of delight to generations of readers, and a major literary influence, much imitated but never equalled. I fail to see - because I do not happen to be a 'Somebody' - why my diary should not be interesting. Mr Pooter is a man of modest ambitions, content with his ordinary life. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen, impertinent young office clerks and wayward friends, not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. Try as he might, he cannot avoid life's embarrassing mishaps. In the bumbling, absurd, yet ultimately endearing figure of Pooter, the Grossmiths created an immortal comic character and a superb satire on the snobberies of middle-class suburbia - one which also sends up late Victorian crazes for spiritualism and bicycling, as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody and everybody.

Mr Charles Pooter is a respectable man. He has just moved into a very desirable home in Holloway with his dear wife Carrie, from where he commutes to his job of valued clerk at a reputable bank in the City. Unfortunately neither his dear friends Mr Cummings and Mr Gowing, nor the butcher, the greengrocer's boy and the Lord Mayor seem to recognise Mr Pooter's innate gentility, and his disappointing son Lupin has gone and got himself involved with a most unsuitable fiancee... George and Weedon Grossmith's comic novel, perfectly illustrated by Weedon, is a glorious, affectionate caricature of the English middle-class at the end of nineteenth century.

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY NEIL BARTLETT 'The life-affirming expression of an artist engaged in living to the full' The Times Smiling in Slow Motion is Derek Jarman’s last journal, stretching from May 1991 until a fortnight before his death in February 1994. Jarman writes with his trademark humour and candour about friends and enemies, as he races through his final years of film-making, gardening and radical political protest. Written from Jarman’s Charing Cross Road flat, his famed garden at Dungeness, and finally from his bed in St Bartholomew's Hospital, Jarman meditates on his own deteriorating health and the loss of his contemporaries. Yet Smiling in Slow Motion is not simply a chronicle of illness and regret: it is, at its heart, one of endeavour, determination and pride.

Meet our memoirist, Augustus Carp, a self-proclaimed "good man" who relishes every opportunity to condemn the weaknesses of others while excusing his own failings. In this spoof autobiography, the pompous narrator enthusiastically recounts his mundane achievements with unwitting hilarity, making frequent asides to bemoan the sins of lesser mortals. Much of the story's ironic humor derives from his delivery; the more seriously Carp takes himself, the more ridiculous he appears. This riotous fable is supported by a cast of delightfully eccentric and grotesque characters: Abraham Stool, manufacturer of the famous Adult Gripe Water; schoolteacher Mr. Beerthorpe, inevitably known to his charges as "Beery"; the Rev. Eugene Cake, author of such improving fiction as Gnashers of Teeth; and other memorable personalities. A cult classic and comic gem, the book was originally published anonymously in 1924 and rediscovered decades later, when its author was revealed as a genteel (and discreet) London physician. This edition features the splendidly droll illustrations by Punch artist Marjorie Blood from the original publication.

The Diary of a Nobody is an English comic novel, serialised in Punch magazine, and written by George and Weedon Grossmith. The Diary records the daily events in the lives of a London clerk, Charles Pooter, his wife Carrie, his son Lupin, and their numerous friends and acquaintances, over a period of 15 months. Charles had a difficult relationship with his 20 year old son Lupin. The Diary of Nobody's Son gives Lupin's side of the story. i wish Pa hadn't called his book The Diary of a Nobody. There's a selfish reason; it makes me out to be nobody's son, in fact, nobody's only son; which makes me sound like I am less than nothing. But there's also an unselfish reason. Pa had his moments when he was nothing like a nobody or, to be positive, something like a somebody. This book is partly Pa's and partly mine as I comment on his diary - and especially on what it says about me. It's a dialogue between him and me, a dialogue we never had in real life because it would have been too difficult. The Diary of Nobody's Son deals with their rows about money, Lupin's love life, Lupin's dress sense and the fact that Lupin thinks little of his father's boss, Mr Perkupp (whom Lupin's father idolises). The Diary came to be recognised by critics as a classic work of humour. Lupin's answer is a gem that answers a gem. Witty, unexpected, and even wise in places.

In the 1880s, George Grossmith was the dazzling comic star of Gilbert and Sullivan’s immensely popular Savoy operas. London theatregoers waited excitedly for the next production, knowing that George would be cast in the lead role of the ‘patter man’. He was also many other things in his life, including Bow Street court reporter, piano entertainer for high society, and in the 1890s, with his brother Weedon, the author of the humorous classic work of fiction, The Diary of a Nobody, which has never been out of print and continues to inspire other writers. In this fascinating book, Stephen Wade tells the story of Grossmith’s life, from Penny Reading entertainer to self-styled ‘society clown.’ A Victorian Somebody places him firmly in context, recalls the many friends and colleagues who worked with George, and puts him once again centre stage, exactly where he should be.

E. M. Delafield's largely autobiographical novel takes the form of a journal written by an upper-middle-class lady living in a Devonshire village. Written with humour, this charming novel is full of the peculiarities of daily life. The Provincial Lady of the title attempts to avoid disaster and prevent chaos from descending upon her household. But with a husband reluctant to do anything but doze behind The Times, mischievous children and trying servants, it's a challenge keeping up appearances on an inadequate income, particularly in front of the infuriating and haughty Lady Boxe. As witty and delightful today as when it was first published in 1930, Diary of a Provincial Lady is a brilliantly observed comic novel and an acknowledged classic. This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition features an introduction by author and journalist Christina Hardyment. Designed to appeal to the book lover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift-editions of much loved classic titles. 'Only when one has lost all curiosity about the future has one reached the age to write an autobiography.' Waugh begins his story with heredity, writing of the energetic, literary and sometimes eccentric men and women who, unknown to themselves, contributed to his genius. Save for a few pale shadows, his childhood was warm, bright and serene. The Hampstead and Lancing schooldays which followed were sometimes agreeable, but often not. His life at Oxford - which he evokes in Brideshead Revisited - was essentially a catalogue of friendship. His cool recollection of those hedonistic days is a portrait of the generation of Harold Acton, Cyril Connolly and Anthony Powell. That exclusive world he recalls with elegant wit and precision. He closes with his experiences as a master at a preparatory school in North Wales which inspired Decline and Fall.

"Why should I not publish my diary? I have often seen reminiscences of people I have never heard of, and I fail to see- because I do not happen to be a 'Somebody"-why my diary should not be interesting. My only regret is that I did not commence it when I was a youth." -Charles Pooter from the Diary of a Nobody Diaries reveal life as it really is and can be indiscrete and very personal as they give away a great deal of genuine information that is not usually available to other people. However published diaries may be sanitized and edited so that some of the worst excesses are removed. They may provide a gloss that attempts to enhance the reputation of the writer of the diary and encourage people to view him or her more creditably than they actually deserve. So all published diaries need to be read with a certain amount of healthy skepticism and yet they provide fascinating snapshots of the feelings, thoughts and experiences of the person writing the diary.
